So, why have we been standing in line to sign up for those salsa dancing lessons and to buy those fabulous ballroom dresses? Well, Dancing with the Stars and Strictly Come Dancing have certainly played a large part in the tremendous upsurge in our interest in ballroom and Latin ballroom dancing in recent years.  People both young and old are attracted to the competitive fun of this popular activity.

Ballroom dancing is a pastime you can enjoy with your partner.  For singles, it's a great way to meet people.  It is the perfect opportunity to exercise.  This is clearly shown by the TV celebrity contestants who not only lose weight during the series, but also become trim and toned, showing off their gorgeous ballroom dresses to even better effect.

Now when you are practising it is fine to wear whatever dancing clothes you like; the emphasis being on comfort.  For many though, an integral part of the ballroom dancing experience is the ballroom clothes.  Not only the dresses, but there's all those accessories too: shoes, handbag, gloves, jewelry, hair pieces - not to mention matching partner!

All this can be an expensive business.  You want to cut a dash on the dance floor, but you also need to stay within your budget.  The dress is by far the the most costly (and most important) part of your dancing costume. 

The secret to finding the right dress is to start your search well in advance of when you need it.  No stress, no pressure.  In my experience, there are not many, if any, local stores that supply ballroom dancing dresses.  You might be tempted to buy an evening or cocktail dress.  The problem with these is that most are not designed for vigorous movement. The fabrics are not suitable either - they need to have some give in them. 

There is, however, plenty of choice of dancewear dresses online.  A big advantage too is that the dress you go for is much less likely to be the same as anyone else's.  Before you take the step of ordering online, it's certainly worth looking in your local stores for general styles that suit your figure - short, long, how about the neckline?  You can also get an idea of what colors suit your skin tone and hair color.  A bit of research saves making easily avoidable mistakes.

What do you need to look for?  Not just flattering and beautiful, ballroom dance dresses must be comfortable and functional.  They need to move with your body as you move on the dance floor.  So, they are figure-hugging in some places, loose and flowing in others.  That's why it's so important to take accurate measurements.  This is not the time to try and squeeze into that smaller dress size!  You should also consider your partner.  You don't want your dress tripping him up.  You both want to be able to dance with confidence without fear of ripping your dress or, worse still, injury.

So, you have a good idea of the colors and styles that suit (and don't suit) you, and of course, your correct vital statistics.  You know that evening dresses are just not made for ballroom dancing.  You should now look for a specialist store online where you can successfully browse for ballroom dresses to flatter and delight you.
