Cripta Dos
Verona era ed è un centro politico ed economico molto importante. Ma è anche una città ricca di storia e di atmosfere magiche e affascinanti.
Verona è divenuta una città molto famosa in Italia ma anche in tutto il mondo, soprattutto grazie alle opere di Shakespeare qui ambientate. Il Bardo non aveva mai avuto occasione di dormire in camere Verona, ma se ne era fatto un’idea leggendo le opere di Luigi Da Porto, Masuccio Salernitano e Matteo Bandello. Questi scritti lo ispirarono soprattutto per la sua opera più famosa e conosciuta nel mondo, “Giulietta e Romeo”. Shakespeare si immaginava Verona come una sorta di Venezia con canali e gondole, forse ispirato dai pittori veneziani a corte in Londra. Shakespeare aveva probabilmente un rapporto particolare con l'immagine che si era creato della città, tanto che ambientò o diede origine a suoi personaggi a Verona. Va ricordato anche I due gentiluomini di Verona e la Bisbetica domata, ambientata a Padova, ma con il personaggio maschile centrale, Petruccio veronese. Proprio in funzione Shakespeariana Verona è fra le città italiane più presenti nei toponimi dei nuovi continenti. Le varie Verona statunitensi, canadesi ed australiane nascono dalle sue opere.
Già il famoso poeta George Byron attesta l'importanza del ruolo avuto da William Shakespeare nel plasmare la fama della città nel mondo. Nelle sue lettere il poeta sottolineava come i veronesi sostenessero con ostinazione l'autenticità della storia di Romeo e Giulietta. Inoltre i veronesi da tempo erano alla ricerca dei luoghi dove si sarebbe svolta la storia. Il primo luogo a essere "riscoperto" fu la tomba dei due amanti, identificato nel Cinquecento in un sepolcro vuoto in marmo rosso veronese, nei pressi di un convento. Furono molti i nomi famosi che resero omaggio ai due amanti in questo luogo, tra cui Madame de Staël, Maria Luigia d'Austria, Heinrich Heine, Charles Dickens e lo stesso George Byron. Le tomba venne poi spostata dall'orto al chiostro e nel 1868 al coperto, e infine nel 1937 grazie all'opera di Antonio Avena essa venne spostata all'interno di una loggia in Romanico veronese che venne risistemata in chiave scenografica con l'utilizzo di due vani sotterranei trasformati in una cripta gotica, dove i turisti che soggiornino in un hotel Verona centro possono ammirarla tuttora.
La casa di Giulietta fu invece identificata in una casa medievale dotata dello stemma di un cappello, dimora della famiglia Capuleti, che Charles Dickens descrive nelle “Pictures from Italy” come un miserabile alberguccio. In effetti a seguito dei rimaneggiamenti sette-ottocenteschi risultava essere diventata una casa popolare a ringhiera, così Antonio Avena fece impiego di materiale di spoglio e andò a inserire un nuovo balcone costituito da un lastrone di marmo che era in stato di abbandono nel cortile del Castel Vecchio. La spregiudicata opera di restauro fece diventare la casa di Giulietta nuova immagine simbolo di Verona, insieme all'Arena.
L'ultimo luogo in ordine cronologico a essere riconosciuto è la casa di Romeo, la quale mostra ancora oggi intatta la sua natura e aspetto di casa fortificata, appartenuto ai Nogarola, amici fidati degli Scaligeri. Più che i singoli luoghi legati alla tragedia però è l'idea della splendente Verona medievale in cui si sarebbe svolta la vicenda di cui si sono innamorati spettatori, lettori e turisti che per vederla soggiornano in hotel aeroporto Verona. Sono comunque effettivamente esistite a Verona due famiglie di nome Montecchi e Capuleti (o Cappelletti), anche se la tragica e affascinante storia d'amore è frutto della fantasia shakespeariana.
