One of the great pleasures of being a critic is that you never know what will happen in your mailbox. There are writers so great back there. In fact, I have to make a confession, did you know that can take me to a bookstore and I can almost guarantee that I would not be able to find a book I wanted to read! The bookstores sell NYT best-sellers and little else. Well, I do not like Clancy and Stephen King's world, love new authors, who have a heart in what they write.

Which brings me Richard IDE and his new book 3 Aces. I read the synopsis, and I must admit I was not sure, as a plot would be nice. The former Vietnam veteran with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) driver of long-distance truck was responding to a poker game girl depressed alcoholic and trying to rehabilitate others with the help of a dog with three legs!

Well, I was wrong! The plot works great. Richard Ide is doing with aplomb.

Abner Weaver is a man who has lost his ambition, a truck driver who has become quite the world and slowly heading into a very dark path. Their trucks are less attractive than are the cargoes. But, do you mind? No, the comfort of the cabin is all that matters. Abner found his nirvana behind a windshield covered failure and a tired old diesel engine, knocking at your service.

A chance encounter with what Abner think first as a "lot lizard" is beginning to change their views. Dawn Carlisle is not a bitch, is only a girl a little sad, ranging from a failed marriage and an ugly custody battle. A battle that can not find a way to win without a job, she has no chance to get his girl back. She has no skills other than a natural inclination for mathematics, but only for use of playing poker. Struggling to be appreciated by the judge.

So with that backdrop, Richard Ide takes us on an interesting journey of discovery. I have to admit that the only person I Sorry for the reading of this book is the editor. He or she must have had sleepless nights with road transport and jargon of poker! He took some time to collect it. He learned some new terms, I like "evil lizard" - what a great description of prostitutes in the low range that has at truck stops.

I was also impressed by the research that Richard Ide has done in its use of local and historical vignettes presented occasionally. 3 aces covers much ground, literally, and metaphorically. The book ends with the best Vietnam War, I think I've read. Short and to the point.

Super book I loved, and you can get at Amazon.
