Ah the days when you were a teenager and you wore flip flops. They were all the rage. They were a kid's thing. Well, shop at any neighborhood store now days you you'll quickly see that the idea of them being for kids is a thing of the past. There are ladies flip flops and even wedding flip flops. They are a fashion statement and honestly a part of nearly every girl's wardrobe.
They date back more than 5000 years to the Egyptian's and were though of the footwear of powerful. Different styles were even used to separate social circles. The rulers wore ones that curved up on the sides. Styles were matched with the jewelry adorned as well.
Germany was the first to make them in the modern era and the German's actually trademarked the term flip flop.
If royalty was wearing them, you would most likely guess they were made form the most precious materials. Actually, that's not true. They were crafted from palm leaves, canvas, various animal carcasses, and even from wood. Each individual culture had materials available to them that were more practical than others. This largely steered who had them made from what materials. Even back then, functional was still a priority as protection of the feet was crucial for protection of the feet to avoid abrasions that may serve as an entrance in to the body for disease and infection.
Flip flops in modern times have infiltrated the corporate setting. They often have a businesslike style making them appropriate in certain business settings. Some leather variations can be priced upwards of $45. The rubber flip flop is still the staple flip flop. Those are available for a couple dollars still at major chain stores. Not many things can be bought at a couple dollars and especially not things that are that useful.
Designer flip flops and Gaucho slacks for women were where the current increase in sales all pretty much started. Needless to say, shorter slacks display what is on your feet. It is only reasonable that something affordable and fashionable and stylish would rise from this. They are so popular currently that you can buy them at nearly any local store.
Again, if you think they are all reasonably priced however, think again. As you could expect, designers took an interest as well. Previously, most designers considered and didn't pay attention to flip flops. Now, the story is different. Designers have signature ones that are only their designs.
Price shopping as of late has gotten more interesting since designers have gotten involved. Stores like Target still have very low cost rubber flip flops. Most malls now have a store dedicated to flip flops. However, stores that are thought of as top shelf designer stores have gotten in to the act and have caused the price of the flip flops up substantially. Depending upon the style and the designer, the price can very quite a bit. When shopping for them, be aware you may have to actually comparison shop.
With the increase in sales, some makers have considered the construction of flip flops and you can now buy them with arch support, soft leather soles, lambs wool soles, and even soft leather soles and straps. If you are going to spend $55 on a pair, you would hope them to be as functional as they are a fashion statement.
Flip flops have been around thousands of years and are one of the most lasting fashion statements throughout history. With the recent gaining popularity of designer and fashionable designs, it is likely they will be around for generations to come. Considering the cost and functionality, you would do well to have a few pairs yourself.
