Gap Girl
Twice now, last year, I made my Martin acoustic guitar, headed toward two different houses where friends in every house there was a player 14 year old guitar. In one case, she was a girl of 14 years, the other a boy of 14 years. The girl still wore braces on boy was about 6 feet, a thick head of long hair, curly at the end and looking very sensual. A house accommodated, and more adolescent, a Fender Stratocaster in the other house, in addition to the youth, is an Ibanez electric guitar.
I discovered early attempt to confuse with a person over 40 years my junior, that the gap between generations has been a very big difference. Here, I Nice open agreements played in the key of G or D and there were my playing partners interference on power chords grungy guitars and play their music very much! I would like listen for a while and when they ran out of time (only for now!) I would say they play something a little more melodic and then I try follow me and provide some type of rhythmic accompaniment. This establishes a kind of blank stare, one that had an edge of anxiety among adolescents who are associated. But, because in each case, there was a parent, they try to cooperate and, ultimately, in a few minutes, the momentum would once again die and there was an embarrassed silence.
Finally I put my own guitar to realize that it did not work out. And little by little, respective youth began to play tricks they played really well and felt comfortable with and I would like to offer my compliments to play the guitar fine.
In both cases a few minutes commonality would emerge. In one case, I asked the girl with her Start to play a few simple tasks, Am, F, D and G. I showed him the movie, I started on my guitar, she took the pace and when she seemed to fall into the groove I took the initiative to read the Apache, one of my favorite guitar instrumental early 1960. Surprisingly, after about 90 seconds resonance very well together, it could not maintain his interest or concentration and fell into a sequence a power chord of a song by Green Day.
With the young man and his Ibanez electric, the time came when, after having seen grimacing in pain him to this attempt to play together, I asked if I could show him some of my original songs on my Martin. He and his friend readily agreed and I took a few minutes to retune the guitar to DADGAD tuning. He said he had heard of it but did not know what it was. So I continued to play the two instrumental pieces that I wrote and at the end, there were a few minutes of genuine musical appreciation. We crossed the ditch and appreciated each other for music. And even later in the evening, the handsome young man made several references to Dadgad tuning and I'm sure it's something he'll hack on his own.
If the opportunity arises to make music and to music with someone across the chasm of musical tastes, I highly recommend working to fill this gap. Musical appreciation can certainly bring generations together.
