Huge Lot
There is one huge difference between an alpha tester and a beta tester...an alpha tester will make a lot more money than a beta tester!
Beta testers are people who are hired to test games when the game is nearing completion. Some beta testers don't even get paid if it's a public beta test where online functionality is being tested. In public tests, you might not even get to keep the game.
A beta testers pay is usually in the lower range of about $10 an hour. As your reputation and experience builds, you will be able to get higher paid jobs and make a decent living out of testing video games.
Alpha testers are people who get paid to play games that aren't fully developed. Alpha video game testers are called in when the first playable portion of the game is made. Alpha testers are much more involved in the game testing and are going to get paid a lot more.
You can literally earn up to $120 an hour testing video games.
Keep in mind though, when you are just starting out as a video game tester and looking for your first beta tester job, be willing to work for cheap. Even if it's only $10 an hour, if you can get the job take it. It will be great to put on your resume.
What games have alpha testing?
Simple, the high budget games. Higher budget games can afford the needed expense of paying game testers a lot sooner and for a lot more. This ensures a quality game that won't need to be recalled. Shipping a bug filled game can cost the developer millions of dollars.
So what games have beta testing?
Every game has beta testing, only some developers outsource it. Again, it depends on budget. Remember, beta testing is really just testing when the game is almost complete. You can still make good money if you find a developer with a high budget looking for game testers.
You need to be diligent in your search.
Where can I find these jobs as alpha or beta testers?
Make a list of game developer websites. Check them regularly for postings! Also be sure to find out who is in charge of hiring. Get your name out there. Start contacting the people in the hiring positions and let them know who you are and what you can do for them.
What should I say in my application?
Know this: its not about what you want, its about what they want. You will be hired to find bugs, not have fun. They don't care how good you are at Smash Brothers. They want to know you have the patience and persistence to find their game's problems. Assure them that you can!
