Leather Infant
Does a leather couch increase the risk of infant suffocation?
We are buying a new couch and considering leather. My wife is concerned if there is an increased risk of an infant suffocating on leather as opposed to cloth. Has anyone heard of this before?
I would not suggest you to buy a leather couch when you have an infant. We claim to supervise our infants all the times, but practically its not possible. Its a natural habit of an infant to turn to its right or left and face down. Its very common, no matter how much you ensure to his/her safety, you miss those special moments when you find infant not exactly at a place where you left him/her for few seconds. Those fraction of seconds make all the differences. Since plastic and leather are the most suffocating, you must not take any risk. Better to buy a breath taking couch which can allows the infant to breath when left unattended for those few seconds.
Secondly, infant skin is vulnerable to irritation. Leather is irritating for new born babies, I better say it can be. When we allow our skin to rest on leather, that portion of our skin which comes in contact with leather, sweats. Which means it didn't get proper air, as the case in leather. For an infant, we indirectly aren't allowing his/her skin to breath, which is important. In a situation like this, his/her skin may irritate and you may notice rashes on the skin.
Overall meaning is, I don't suggest you to buy leather couch for your infant, better stick to cloth-couches. And in case, you still want to go for it, (though I stress on a big NO), make sure to avoid Leatherette - the most irritating leather for kids. Strange but true, its made with paper and cloth or from plastic, still called leather. In any leather product, its degree that counts. So avoid Leatherette when you buy. Otherwise, avoid it. Simple !
