Lime Size
The banks of the Ogeechee River is strongly rooted tree with a little known fruit called the "Ogeechee Lime" Nyssa Ogeechee, which could easily require the attention of farmers, who are looking for a secondary crop. Local landowners and those who fish on the banks of the River, are familiar with this tree that can reach 30-40 m high, and the autumn leaves and the oval shaped fruit turn a brilliant scarlet. The fruit or berry is about 1-2 cm long and reached the approximate size of a large kumquat with a pleasant acid taste, which is similar to lime or other citrus. The fruit is used to flavor foods and drinks, when the juice is released, or it can be used in preserving and canning items such as jams and jellies from local residents.
Several botanists in the past centuries noted that Ogeechee Limes were found more in settlements with roots in water, and then, naturally, they recommended that planting of this tree should be done in a bog garden. There are trees planted in the garden at the Arboretum of the Plains Experiment Station Coastal Tifton, Ga, who are more mature and well in well drained soil. These trees produce bushels of fruit in fall which is very popular with children and adults.
The famous American explorer earlier, William Bartram, in traveling through Georgia in 1793, wrote, "I saw large, tall trees of Nyssa Ogeechee pushing the banks of the river, there is no tree that presents a more desirable one in the fall, when the fruit is ripe and the tree is stripped of its leaves, for then they look as red as scarlet, with fruit that is that color too. It is of the form, but larger than the olive, containing a pleasant acid juice. The colony further north of that tree, yet unknown, is the great Ogeechee River, where they are called Ogeechee Limes, and they are sometimes used instead.
These trees are producing reliable annual incredible masses of fruit, that when dead-ripe in September falls to the ground after changing color from green to scarlet red that spectacular. Trees can also be shaken by hand to collect the files as they fall to the ground on the leaves. Many people have a preference for the fruits such as limes are beginning to change color, looking somewhat as Green Nagami 'kumquats in appearance and size. One day, this native American tree will become a very important producer of fruit trade. The fruit these trees is remarkably uniform in size. Trees should be planted in partial shade or full sun and require frequent irrigation for maximum production, however, they do not require fertilization and pest and disease pose no problem. The trees are pollinating.
Pollen of Ogeechee lime is considered very important that bees make honey called "Tupelo Honey". This exceptional product is considered quality gastronomic specialty stores.
