Navy Mary
The team of Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein II world has been known for many years. These two incredibly talented artists have their credit a long list of accomplishments, they are probably most known for musicals like The Sound of Music, Oklahoma! and The King and I, but perhaps the best known and most beloved of all their production is prodigious South Pacific.
The first production of South Pacific was held at the Majestic Theater on Broadway in 1949, and ran with nearly 2,000 performances in more than five years. Meanwhile, and in the ensuing years, he has probably won more awards and delighted fans musical theater more than any other in history. The musical won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950 and has won at least 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score and Best booklet. It is the only musician to have won four Tony Awards for acting.
James A. Michener 's Tales of the South Pacific, on which the musical is based, won the Pulitzer Prize for literature, and when Joshua Logan and Oscar Hammerstein He decided to write an adaptation for the stage, Michener even helped another "tale" to lighten the mood of serious stories the two envisioned.
South Pacific takes place during the Second World War, and the characters include troops of the Navy of the United States stationed on an island Tropical fairly close proximity to other islands occupied by the Japanese. The line of history and drama involving the trials and triumphs men and women in unknown and dangerous territory, both physical and emotional. The two main characters are Emile de Becque, a wealthy and worldly French, and Nellie Forbush, an American nurse who is also very optimistic "suspicious". In the original Broadway production, they are strikingly represented by the stars Ezio Pinza and Mary Martin. Emile is the French delighted by young Nellie, and she by him. She knows that he has been married before, but that the two children she encounters are half Polynesian, (in his mind an insurmountable barrier). Meanwhile, young restless and solitary men of the navy are languishing in the company of women, and find a host of "Bloody Mary", an older woman who beckons Tonkinese from "Bali Ha'i." However, while racial and cultural barriers can be crossed physical education is another import. Lt. Joe Cable, a Marine of the United States on a dangerous mission, falls in love with the daughter of Bloody Mary's Liat, he mistakenly assumes is a prostitute but shrinks from the idea of marrying a dark-skinned woman.
The issue of racial and cultural prejudices is briefly discussed when Emile request, sadly, why Nellie was rejected by his marriage to a woman with dark skin. It was explained to him as something not instinctive, but "carefully taught in the revolutionary lyrics: "You have to be taught ... to hate all the people in your family hate." Emile the French can not understand this attitude, but Nellie and Lt. Cable is still mired in it, and I do not know how to get out.
As the war continues, Lt. Cable persuade Emile to go along on a dangerous mission to a neighboring island occupied by the Japanese, a mission he hopes to make a crucial difference in the balance of power in the war. Emile, in despair at his lost love, will, and Nellie is torn by conflicting emotions. When the mission is completed, Lt. Joe Cable has been killed, and Emile narrowly escapes his life. It is, however, a happy ending: Nellie and her "half-caste ' children respond together, and love conquers all, as it should.
South Pacific continues to "delight" the public as much as ever. The music is irresistible, with gems like "Some Enchanted Evening," "Younger Than Springtime," and the haunting "Bali Hai", she was performed in countless venues and by many different actors and actresses. It never fails to provide an enjoyable and memorable.
The good news is that the Broadway revival currently playing, and no deadline was mentioned. You can see and hear This wonderful Broadway show and the cast of this production is once again star-studded. Part of Nellie Forbush is beautifully played by three-time candidate Tony Award Kelli O'Hara. Paulo Szot, who won a Tony Award, is ideal for the role of Emile de Becque.
