One Zebra
Why is one of my zebra danios bullying the other?
Me and my boyf bought a new 96 litre freshwater tropical tank and are slowly building our community. For our first fish the lady in the fish shop suggested getting two zebra danios as they are robust fish and good for beginners to care for. We noticed that one of them chases the other around the tank and at first we thought they we just playing but after reading up on fish I thought maybe this could be down to agression. Does anyone have any tips as to preventing the bullying? Is it because there are only 2 fish from a family that are traditionally shoalers? thanks in advance.
I know 2 is never enough for these type of fish (should be 6-8) but that is all the meanie woman would let us get.
Stick with just the two danio for the time being, untill your tank is fully cycled. "The meanie" at the fish store was trying to protect you from killing fish by overstocking before the nitrogen cycle is complete. As your water chemistry stabilizes-ammonia at 0 ppm nitirites at 0 ppm nitrates kept under 40 ppm...then you can slowly add more danio to the school. This will take about a month or so.
Sometimes there is an "agressor" in a school of danio, one that will relentlessly chase the other fish. I have one very fat danio that chased the others in her school untill they all starved... one by one... she can't be kept with other danio, so I keep her with large goldfish... she can't boss them around. Once your school is established, watch the bully, and try to keep an eye on the rest of the school, to make sure that they are not being denied food. You may need to partition the bully from the rest of the shoal via a partiton net, or some other means of seperation. Seperation is the best way to fend off agression.
