Benzoyl peroxide is commonly used over the counter treatment for pimple. It is usually used in in treating mild cases of pimple. But do you know all the facts of this chemical when youÂ’re getting rid of pimple?
Most people are not even aware of the side effects associated with using over the counter pimple treatment. Sometime we assume that if we can get it that easily, it must be safe.
Benzoyl peroxide works by destroying the bacteria that causes acne, appropriately named P. acnes. It basically works like an antiseptic and oxidizing agent. It prevents the formation of blocked pores and it will require you to continuously apply it for 2 to 3 weeks before seeing any appreciable result.
Banzoyl peroxide comes in many form such as gels, creams, lotions and cleanser. It comes in various concentrations. If you check the labels ( of the product you wish to purchase) youÂ’ll see that it comes in 2.5%, 5% and 10% concentration.
If youÂ’re just starting the treatment, you should start with the lowest concentration first. Over time when youÂ’re not seeing any appreciable difference (after using 2 -3 weeks) gradually move to a higher concentration.
These are some of the side effect associated with using benzoyl peroxide.
Most common side effect suffered by its users are skin dryness. This can be remedied using moisturizer to retain your skinÂ’s moisture. However, certain cases have shown that there may be irritation or dermatitis developed. Check the concentration of your acne treatment solution, itÂ’s usually caused by high concentration of benzoyl peroxide. Try using a lower concentration acne treatment to solve the problem.
Skin irritation is another form of side effect of using benzoyl peroxide. Some experience mild irritation and in worse case, severe irritation even when using it infrequently. If this happens to you, stop using it right now.
As mentioned earlier, dermatitis is another symptom of side effect. You may have allergic reaction with benzoyl peroxide which resulted in dry, itchy skin. Stop usage immediately and treat your dermatitis.
Did you know that benzoyl peroxide has been proven to cause cancer? Does that get your attention? However, this is only in the case when you use 100% concentration of benzoyl peroxide. Nonetheless, its good to know wht sort of risk youÂ’re taking when you use over the counter acne treatments.
When you think of getting rid of pimple, there are many more alternative to using chemicals. Start looking for alternative if chemical doesnÂ’t work for you. Look at what you eat and remember, acne may just be the symptom of a even bigger problems such as high toxicity in your body and rather than treating the symptom, it just makes more sense to treat the cause of the symptom.
