Toys for dogs. How do you have in your house? I have tons of them scattered throughout the house. When I go shopping, I'm always on the lookout cool toys. I have most of the toy collection featuring the United Canine. Well, someone has to test them and my dogs are willing participants. Last night my local news station featured a segment on a non-profit website that discloses the results of tests for animal products for hazardous chemicals as lead, arsenic and chlorine.
As Canine United CEO Mary Beth Close said over and over - the pet industry is huge and unattended. I should know better, but I brought toys for dogs doubtful. I'm sure most of us went guilty of buying imported toys cheap dog - those of supermarkets, big box pet stores and discount stores and a dollar.
Time to rethink my buying habits. I may have been to the health of my dog in danger. Good to know there are groups that products around to monitor, conduct laboratory tests and publish their findings. And good to know that the United Canine researches, evaluates and selects its product selection based Safety, efficacy and quality. For example, you will not find bones or rawhide chips, Greenies, little squeaky toys, balls Tennis or electronic shock equipment in the United Canine store, because these products have proved dangerous, less effective or harmful for dogs. HealthyStuff.org tested over 400 products for pets, there including beds, chew toys, stuffed toys, collars, leashes, and tennis balls. As there are no government standards for substances Dangerous chemicals in animal products, it is not surprising that there are alarming levels of toxic chemicals that are found - even in well known brand names such as Coleman. HealthyStuff.org results are of particular concern for pets and children. Pets and Children are frequently close to the floor and generally put products into their mouths. Exposures are higher, causing problems health bigger.
The U.S. government does not require complete testing of chemicals before they are added to most products consumption. And once they are on the market, the government almost never restricted their use, even in the face of new scientific evidence suggesting a threat to health. Because children, adults and animals can be exposed to chemicals from many sources, and because the effects of certain chemicals is cumulative, it is important to look at the overall picture concerning chemicals and health. The law is supposed to, the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976, is exceeded by non-partisan U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). In 2005, the GAO found:
- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has limited data on existing chemicals, including toxicity and exposure information;
- EPA lacks data to ensure that health risks and environmental potential of new chemicals are identified;
- Chemical companies are not required to prepare and submit information on the toxicity EPA unless EPA issues a rule;
- The EPA used its authority to require testing for fewer than 200 of the 62,000 chemicals in commerce since 1979;
- For "new" chemicals, the EPA estimated that only about 15 percent include test data for health or safety;
- For existing chemicals, chemical groups, only 5 out of 62,000 have been limited by the EPA in 29 years.
