White Black

How do you color your sand: white, black or red? You will find all three within sixty miles. White Sands National Monument just south of Alamogordo, New Mexico Valley Fire west of Carrizozo and Tularosa addition, you can have everything in one day.

White Sands National Monument, about fifteen miles southwest of Alamogordo, New Mexico on Route 70, is a sight to see. The sand is white because of gypsum found in mountains San Andreas. The rain washed plaster to Lake Lucero, which is located on the White Sands Missile Range. This is off limits to civilians and park rangers give regularly tours. The heat of the day water evaporates leaving the dry plaster. The wind blows sand and shapes of different types dunes. Wildlife survives in this harsh environment. Most of it is nocturnal, choosing to remain underground during the heat of the day. You can see evidence of moving them to footprints in the sand.

Sixty miles north are deposits of black lava at The Valley of the Fires Recreation Area. the casting up through cracks in the ground at Little Black Peak and flowing southward between 1500 and 5000 years ago. A nature trail winds through the lava fields. For more adventurous, you can hike on the lava flows and even hiking in Little Black Peak. Wear sturdy hiking boots and bring plenty of water. You're still in the Chihuahuan Desert. The lava covers over 125 square miles and reaches a depth of 160 feet. Flora and fauna abound in the lava cooled. Fees day shall be collected at the door as well as recreational vehicles and camping fees for tents. The costs of helping the Bureau of Land Management improve facilities of the recreation area.

The area around Carrizozo is Billy the Kid country and the Lincoln County Range Wars in the 1870s. Before the ancient peoples petroglyphs carved into the lava. They give way to the Mescalero Apaches.

Forty miles south of Carrizozo and seventeen miles north of Tularosa mounds stand fifty feet littered many rocks. This site must have a special religious significance for the ancient people who lived in the Tularosa Basin. They have carved more than 21,000 drawings on these rocks. Sunbursts Mask, circles, representations of animals, shaman drawings, handprints and geometric designs. A roundtrip mile you lead to the cluster of petroglyphs. A trail guide describes the location of eleven stops en route. The trail rises fifty feet and has many staircases of rock and earth. The Bureau of Land Management operates the three rivers petroglyph site. The daily fees and camping fees help to support this single site.

These rock carvings were made by a group of prehistoric Indians which archaeologists call Jornada Mogollon. The petroglyphs were made in different ways. Some were just scratched the patina of the rocks. Using two rocks as a hammer and chisel others formed. The petroglyphs are very fragile and must be respected. We do not know why they were made. But they sum up a lifestyle among people. They were very religious and had a close relationship with nature. What is left behind in their works amazing.

Back to Alamogordo. Because of all work carried out missile at White Sands and Holloman AFB, Alamogordo has its own museum space. Not as elaborate as the Space Museum in Hutchinson, Kansas, it does stand on its own. It delves into the space station, the shuttle and space exploration to the top honor the men and women who have contributed to the program. The best exposure is outside the museum. It is as Daisy Decelerator, which tested the G-force of sudden deceleration. Fascinating!
